Choosing the Right Building Company for You

Choosing the Right Building Company for You

Not all building companies are the same. Here is Christchurch we have seen an explosion of builders setting up their own company: how do you know who is the best builder for your project? Who is the right building company for you to work with? We’ve compiled this list of points for you to make your decision a little easier. If you want to know more, please contact  us to talk through how we can help your home building project.

  • Ask friends and family who have built something similar and compile a list of building companies to look into
  • The builder should be someone you can trust, so talk with them and get to know them a little better
  • Ask around about them, has anyone heard of them (not always a bad sign) or do they show up on Google?
  • Search Companies Office website – if they own lots of companies or have closed a lot, be warned
  • Google the company name and their owners names
  • Look at their previous work – does it suit what you’re looking for?
  • Check to see if the builder is on the Licensed Building Practitioner register  before they start your job
  • See if the builder belongs to any associations like New Zealand Certified Builders or Master Builders – you can contact the associations if you have any questions about the company
  • Do they have the appropriate insurance in place – ask for a copy
  • Do they hand out the MBIE consumer checklist? This is legislated they give you a copy before you sign the contract
  • Create a shortlist of the builders and visit some of the sites they are working on
  • Try not to look at awards only, lots of good builders don’t enter award competitions
  • Apart from building, ask what else your builder will do i.e. project management
  • What level of pricing do you see? Will there be PC Sums? What support do I get to help make decisions?
  • Does your builder work closely with any architects in particular? This is key to the success of your build project
  • Who will you communicate with during the build? It’s in your best interest to speak directly to the builder, it saves confusion when dealing directly with the person who knows what they’re doing.
